This experience led to my belief in a strong fundamentals course for music students who may not have had the background I did. I began teaching Fundamentals of Music in 2008, and found it to be an excellent prerequisite to the first semester of Music Theory. At the same time I saw that some local high schools were offering a course in music theory that served the same purpose - to prepare high school musicians for that first semester of collegiate music theory.
In 2017 I took a course in Educational Research and Statistics. This course gave me the opportunity to work on preliminary research in how success or failure in the first semester of music theory is related to the overall success of the music graduate. I am sharing the results of that work below. You can also choose to download the document.
